Car batteries rarely die without warning. They give you several weeks of hints first — most people just don't recognise them until the morning the car refuses to start.
The warning signs
- Slow cranking. The engine turns over lazily before catching, especially on the first start of the day. This is the clearest early sign.
- Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev. The battery isn't holding charge well.
- Electricals behaving oddly — power windows slower than usual, the infotainment resetting, the clock losing time.
- A battery warning light on the dashboard. Worth knowing: this light often indicates a charging system fault rather than the battery itself.
- Corrosion at the terminals — white or bluish powder around the posts.
- A swollen or bulging case. Stop using it and get it replaced; heat damage has set in.
- You needed a jump start recently. A battery that has been deeply discharged once often fails again soon after.
How long should a battery last?
In Indian conditions, three to five years is typical. Heat is the main enemy — sustained high temperatures shorten battery life more than cold does. Cars used for short trips also suffer, because the alternator never gets enough running time to fully recharge.
It might not be the battery
A weak-seeming battery is sometimes a healthy battery with a different problem behind it:
- A failing alternator that isn't recharging properly
- A parasitic drain — an accessory or wiring fault pulling current with the car switched off
- Loose or corroded terminals making poor contact
- A worn drive belt slipping on the alternator pulley
This is why a proper test matters. Replacing a battery when the alternator is the real fault means you'll be stranded again in a few weeks, having paid for nothing.
Getting more life from your battery
- Drive for at least 20 minutes occasionally rather than only short hops
- Switch off lights, AC and music before turning the engine off
- Keep terminals clean and tight
- If the car will sit unused for weeks, arrange for it to be started and run periodically
