Monsoon is the season that finds every weakness in a car. Worn wipers you tolerated all summer become a safety problem; a slightly soft tyre becomes a skid. A short check before the rains arrive saves a lot of trouble.
Visibility first
- Wiper blades. If they streak, chatter or leave patches, replace them. Rubber hardens in the summer heat, so blades that worked in March may be useless in July. This is the cheapest safety upgrade on any car.
- Washer fluid. Keep the reservoir full. Road spray in the rain is dirtier than you expect.
- Demister and AC. Your AC is what clears a fogged windscreen fast. If cooling is weak, get it checked before you need it.
- All lights. Headlights, tail lights, indicators, brake lights and hazards. Being seen matters more in heavy rain than seeing.
Tyres and braking
- Tread depth. Tread is what channels water away so the tyre can grip. Worn tyres aquaplane on standing water. Check across the full width — uneven wear points to an alignment problem worth fixing.
- Pressure. Check weekly during monsoon. Correct pressure matters more on wet roads.
- Brakes. Get pads and discs inspected. Wet brakes need a longer distance to stop even in good condition.
Underbody and electricals
- Get the underbody and wheel arches cleaned of accumulated mud, which traps moisture against metal and starts rust.
- Check for gaps in door and boot rubber seals — a damp carpet leads to smell, mould and electrical faults.
- Make sure sunroof and body drain channels are clear, if your car has them.
- Have the battery and terminals checked; humidity accelerates corrosion.
Driving through water — the one rule
If you cannot judge the depth, do not drive into it. Water drawn into the engine's air intake causes hydrostatic lock, which is among the most expensive engine repairs there is — and it is very often excluded from insurance claims.
If you do stall in water, do not try to restart the engine. That single attempt is what turns a recoverable situation into a rebuilt engine. Call for a tow.
Keep in the car
A torch, a reflective warning triangle, a basic first-aid kit and a tyre inflator. Also save a towing number in your phone before you need it.
