Your owner's manual gives a service interval — usually somewhere around 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. That figure is a good starting point, but it assumes conditions that many Indian drivers never actually experience.
Why the manual interval is often optimistic here
Manufacturer intervals are set for reasonably clean roads and steady driving. Real conditions in an Indian city look different:
- Stop-and-go traffic. An hour crawling through traffic ages engine oil far more than an hour of highway cruising, even though the odometer barely moves.
- Dust. Air filters and cabin filters clog much faster on dusty roads and during construction season.
- Heat. Sustained high temperatures are hard on oil, coolant and batteries.
- Short trips. If most of your driving is under 10 minutes, the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature, and moisture doesn't burn off properly.
If several of those describe your driving, servicing a little earlier than the manual suggests is money well spent.
A practical schedule
Every 5,000 km or six months — a quick check: engine oil level, coolant, brake fluid, tyre pressure and tread, wiper condition, all lights working. Most of this you can do yourself in ten minutes.
Every 10,000 km or one year — a full service: engine oil and filter change, air filter inspection, brake inspection, battery test, and a general check of belts, hoses and suspension.
Every 20,000–30,000 km — the bigger items: cabin filter, spark plugs on petrol cars, brake fluid, and a closer look at the clutch and suspension. Exact intervals vary by model, so check your manual.
Signs you shouldn't wait for the next service
- A warning light that stays on after starting
- New noises — squealing when braking, knocking over bumps, whining that changes with speed
- The steering pulling to one side, or vibration through the wheel at speed
- Slow or laboured cranking when starting
- Any fluid patch under a car that's been parked overnight
- A noticeable drop in mileage without a change in how you drive
None of these will fix themselves, and each is cheaper to address early.
